MPT to expand fiber optic service to Mandalay
Category: Alternative Telecom
Publishing Date: October 19, 2017

State-owned telecommunication operator Myanmar Posts and Telecommunication (MPT) will offer Fiber To The Home (FTTH) – an internet service – in Mandalay next month.

FTTH is the setting of fibre-optic cables from a central point to one’s accommodation, providing access to internet. MPT announced on their official page that FTTH will offer online services ranging from web browsing, social media, video streaming or gaming. It will offer higher bandwidth capacity to connect multiple devices at once.

MPT’s FTTH services arrived in Yangon last August. The offer is available in Pabedan township near Sule pagoda.

The company plans to expend the service to other townships in Yangon, said U Khin Maung Myint, deputy general manager, marketing department of MPT-KSGM joint operation.

“We will extend FTTH service to Mandalay in November. Simultaneously, we will extend this service to other townships in Yangon,” he told The Myanmar Times.

MPT announced the extension of the FTTH service nationwide by 2018.

Currently, MPT counts over 80 FTTH customers in Yangon region. As MPT provides services from business to business, it is subject to Service Level Agreements, under which, if the fiber internet connection is slow or deficient, MPT has to refund the customer, after checking the source of the problem with technical teams.

Other internet companies, such as 5BB and Myanmar Net, are also providing connectivity services in local markets.
