Qualcomm conducts first successful 5G test on mobile devices

Qualcomm Performs First Successful 5G Test on Mobile Devices.

The test was carried on by using X50 5G modem announced last year. This test was performed on 28GHz mm wave frequency band. While explaining about successful test, Qualcomm revealed that modem achieved gigabit speed speeds in test. The company told that modem is capable of 5Gbps speed once 5G deployments are completed.

According to the Qualcomm, the Snapdragon X50 5G modem relies on multi-element antenna arrays. The antennas are designed to work together intelligently. These antennas are using beamforming and beam tracking technologies. These will extend mmWave’s mobility and reach to non-line-of-sight scenarios. For example, the Snapdragon X50 5Gmodem can direct the energy of the mmWave beam. Then bouncing off obstacles to reach the mmWave 5G small communicating cell.

Qualcomm also announced its first 5G smartphone reference design which will be used to test 5G modem, radios. They pan to launch 5G compatible smartphones in the first half of 2019. The reference design is 9mm think and has edge to edge display.

Qualcomm developed a millimeter wave antenna to make X50 modem work in a smartphone. This antenna is almost of the size of dime. The company told that they can incorporate two such antennas in a smartphone. They also plan to shrink the smallest mm wave design more to 50 percent.

Qualcomm also announced series of components so that device manufacturers can easily support T-Mobile’s new 600MHz spectrum. The company also announced the newSnapdragon 646 processor for mid range smartphones.
