Grameenphone users in Dhaka to get 4G service 15 minutes into launch

Grameenphone subscribers in Dhaka will be able to usefourth generation (4G) data service within 15 minutes after the telecom giant launches the service.

“We are expecting to provide the 4G service by tomorrow afternoon as soon as we get the licence,” Michael Foley, chief executive officer of the GP mobile operator, said at a press conference at the city’s Westin Hotel today.

The users of two cities including Dhaka, who already upgraded their SIM cards for the 4G services, will get the service within 15 minutes of launching, CEO Foley said. He however did not mention the name of the other city.

He said there is confusion among the users that the cost will increase whenever the fastest internet network service will be launched. “The cost level will be the same as the present price,” he added.

There are a total of 6.50 crore people who use GP SIM cards across the country. Around one crore people so far have upgraded their SIM cards to receive the service, the GP CEO informed to the reporters.

The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) will award 4G licences to Grameenphone, Banglalink, Robi and Teletalk tomorrow (February 19), taking Bangladesh into the fourth generation data service era.

The government is set to earn about $593.33 million from spectrum auction and offering technological neutrality to the top three mobile operators, which is less than half of its target.
